Painting Syllabus
Unit 1 Introduction to Painting week 1
Students will:
• Be able to identify a variety of paintbrushes and the uses of those paintbrushes.
• Mix a variety of colors from primaries, black and white, including; secondary, tertiary, complementary, tints and shades.
• Apply complementary, tints, and shades to basic geometric forms to create a three-dimensional appearance by blending colors.
Unit 2 Tempera Painting week 2 - 6
Students will:
• Employ tempera painting techniques while creating paintings using a variety of traditional painting subjects, including; still life, portrait, and landscapes.
• Incorporate a variety of new ideas into their paintings, including; color psychology, hard edge painting, drybrush, and textures.
Unit 3 Acrylic Painting Week 7 – 13
Students will:
• Investigate similarities and differences between tempera paint and acrylic paint use and application.
• Practice a variety of acrylic painting techniques on a variety of painting supports, including; canvas paper, canvas board, masonite and stretched canvas.
• Investigate a variety of different painting movements, including Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Surrealism, and Collage, then incorporate different techniques related to the movements into their own original art work.
Unit 4 Watercolor Painting Week 14 - 20
Students will:
• Examine traditional transparent watercolor works to understand the light layering techniques used.
• Practice a variety of watercolor painting techniques including color mixing, layering, glazing, and several methods of creating textures.
• Employ a variety of painting techniques while creating both abstract and representational work
